Next week, a meeting of European Union regulatory bodies will be held to discuss further measures in relation to the crypto currency.
Vice President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis said that representatives of central banks, as well as market leaders, will attend the meeting. Dombrovskis said that "market participants" will also be invited to speak.
He told the press:
"Next week, 26 February, I will preside over a round table on virtual currencies. The Commission invited key bodies, including central banks and supervisors, as well as market participants to share their ideas. "
"The goal is to look at the long-term trends associated with virtual currencies and to see if the current regulation is suitable for our purposes", – he added.
The timing of the event was chosen reasonably, given that some European leaders, including France and Germany in particular, called for a broader discussion of this topic.
The fourth "round table" goes beyond the discussions between legislative and regulatory bodies of the United States on the potential need for enhanced market control (although other officials said that no important actions will be taken in the near future).
It is possible that at least some of the participants in the round table will be inclined to a tougher regulatory stance, as evidenced by a warning issued earlier this month by three market observers – the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the European Bank (EBA) and the European Insurance and Professional Pension Office (EIOPA).
Representatives of these agencies at the meeting have not yet been selected.
